Five Wards Media is LIVE!

By Five Wards/Newark Stories Staff

In May, we aimed to launch our online news site. Two words, tunnel vision. Our goal was to provide you with as many opportunities to engage with more original stories and content. When we began our work with the Newark News & Story Collaborative, we were part of a newsroom at a local public radio station. Transitioning into an independent project brought many challenges. One of the hardest things for us was finding a media/news partner that valued our community media and training work and was committed to filling information gaps across the city. This challenge pushed our founder, Brit, to think about what would be next for us and why not start our own newsroom?

We launched Five Wards Media with the mission to celebrate, inform and amplify Newark through sharing stories and news that elevate the voices of local Newarkers and our neighborhoods. Newark is underserved and underrepresented in national media. We are creating a space that allows the people of Newark to be heard, seen, and included in the bigger story about our city. Our work focuses on narrative, information, and storytelling that centers the lived experience and information needs of residents across Newark’s five wards.

We appreciate you subscribing to and sharing our newsletter and supporting our work with Newark Stories and now Five Wards Media! Thank you for being a part of our community. Read more about who we are here. Cheers to our next chapter!
